Ephesians 2:8, 9—For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Saved by grace…ah, what a comforting thought. We did not have to earn it, buy it, or steal it. Salvation was a gift, given the moment we surrendered our hearts to Christ and were washed in His blood. We have literally been given a second chance at life! We didn’t deserve a second chance. Not even close. But, it doesn’t matter! God gave it anyway!
It was God’s grace—unmerited favor—that brought us back from the dead. We were dead in our sin, doomed to spend eternity in the fiery pits of hell. That is, until the miracle of grace showered over our souls. We were redeemed! We were bought with a price; specifically, the shed blood of Jesus Christ paid the debt of our sin.
God loves us so much that He willingly paid the ultimate price to cancel our debt. And, there is not a thing we could have done to earn it. What a beautiful thing—grace.
Why do you think it is that God gave grace as a gift? The Scripture is clear: “it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” God knows how people are. We boast of anything we think we accomplished on our own. God knew that, if we could redeem ourselves, we would never give Him the glory. Therefore, He made it so that we couldn’t do it without Him. Imagine that; a multitude of selfish, self-absorbed, self-reliant human beings not giving God credit??? Sorry, folks. That’s us. Don’t worry. I’m about to give you some good news…
Even everyday screw-ups like you and I can still take advantage of God’s grace. Whew! What a relief! Thank you, Jesus!
Prayer for Today:
I thank You that Your blood has washed me clean. I thank You that You chose to give me the gift of salvation, even though I didn’t deserve it. Most of all, I thank You for loving me enough to pay my debt. Thank You for giving me another chance at life. Help me show You my gratitude every day that I live.
Remember that God gave you a second chance. Today, thank Him just for being God.
